Join us for this great discussion and resourced-filled episode with parenting coach Darlynn Childress of "The Parenting Path" where she outlines the Behavior Cycle and how to raise children with emotional connection, even through the hardest moments.

FROM CHAOS TO CALM

Become a Parenting Pathfinder today!

The Parenting Path is a parenting model, developed by Darlynn Childress, that helps parents become empowered to create lasting peace in their homes. Darlynn, a former middle and high school teacher and trained parent educator, created The Parenting Path because she was frustrated by the limited models available to parents; models that either focused solely on behavior modification or solely on emotional development. Darlynn wanted a complete toolbox to use in parenting her two sons.

The Parenting Path is a 4-step model designed for handling tricky parenting moments. The steps in The Parenting Path are CALM, CONNECT, LIMIT SET, CORRECT.

CALM: Parents learn how to calm their mind when angry or overwhelmed.

CONNECT: They learn an easy way to access compassion and teach children about emotional regulation.

LIMIT SET: Parents learn how to set limits that work.

CORRECT: Parents know how to follow-up with correction that develops resilience.

Join us for this powerful talk with author Peter Harrower who tells us about his dyslexia journey and his new book, "The World Through My Dyslexic Eyes."

A word from Peter Harrower:

"I have a Learning Disability and Dyslexia. Most of the time I felt like I wasn't normal. I don't think I’ll ever be normal.

Compared to everybody I felt like an outsider. Kids would always ask, "Why are you in those extra classes and getting extra help?" This led to a lot of unwanted attention. That led to more unwanted feelings, embarrassment, and a lack of confidence in myself, which still affects me to this day at 28.

Join us to hear how Peter has persevered and found purpose and meaning throughout his dyslexia journey.

Join us for the great discussion with author Katherine Lewis on her book "The Good News About Bad Behavior -- Why Kids Are Less Disciplined Than Ever And What To Do About It."

A new and surprising problem has quietly been developing in the current generation of children: they are out of control. A recent study of first-graders found they could sit still for no more than three minutes, only a quarter of the time that their peers could in 1948. Government statistics show that half of all children will develop a mood or behavioral disorder or a substance addiction by age 18. In the era of the helicopter parent, children seem to have lost the ability to regulate their behavior and emotions.

Our time-honored methods of punishments and rewards haven't taught discipline--they've undermined it. Journalist Katherine Reynolds Lewis spent five years investigating this crisis: observing families at the dinner table, meeting educators who are transforming the school experience for kids with attention and mood disorders, studying psychological research, and looking introspectively at her own parenting habits. And in this unexpected and valuable book, she documents a new theory of discipline that could reverse the trend: "The Apprenticeship Model," which centers on listening and building children’s skills to address the root causes of misbehavior, rather than reactionary incentives and consequences. By strengthening their connection, communication and capability, we can raise children who are self-disciplined, confident, and better equipped to handle the challenges they'll face in life--and whose parents can finally stop wondering what they're doing wrong.

The book grows out of Lewis’ July 2015 article for Mother Jones magazine about school discipline. Within days of appearing on MotherJones.com, the article became the site’s most-read story ever, racking up more than 4 million views, 790,000 Facebook shares, 6,000 tweets and 980 comments. Parents and teachers around the world wrote in to say the piece changed their approach with children. It made its way into conference sessions and university curricula, and attracted interest in Sweden and Germany. Clearly, millions of people were facing the same fears, confronting the same problems, and looking for solutions.

About Simplewordbooks.com and Cigdem’s story:

From a very early age, my son had a passion for books. Unfortunately, reading did not come naturally to him. In 2015, at age six, he was diagnosed with Dyslexia. With training, he soon began reading simple words and sentences. One night, he picked up Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss. He read the entire 160+ words over and over, then asked for a chapter book.

I googled, talked to experts, teachers, tutors and parents to find low-level/high-interest books. Others were in search of these books, too, but they did not exist. So I began to write for my son; he began to read. And Project Simple Words was born.

In “Overcoming Dyslexia”, Sally Shaywitz, M.D., professor in Yale University School of Medicine and Co-Director of the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity, talks about many children whose childhood joys were extinguished by dyslexia. The story of Caitlyn’s seventh birthday party Shaywitz tells in her book is the one I will always remember.

All through the party, Caitlyn kept asking “When do I get to blow my candles out?” … [her mom] entered with a cake.. Caitlyn ran over to the table, climbed up on a chair, and bent over the cake. She closed her eyes tightly, concentrated very hard, and then blew out all the candles. Then she ran up the stairs to her bedroom and closed the door. [Her mom] found Caitlyn on her bed with her favorite storybook, Good Night Moon, on her lap. Tears streamed down her face. “You said I would get any wish I wanted, but you were wrong. My wish didn’t come true.” She still could not read any of the words on the page.”

Caitlyn’s story touched my heart and gave me the strength to bring Simple Words Books™ to life. Thank you, Dr. Shaywitz for sharing it.

While empathizing with the parental hopes and, especially, fears that lead to overhelping, Ms. Lythcott-Haims offers practical alternative strategies that underline the importance of allowing children to make their own mistakes and develop the resilience, resourcefulness, and inner determination necessary for success.

How do children thrive? As a parent, you probably think about this all the time. You want your children to have happy, healthy, and meaningful lives—but what’s the best way to support them? In this episode, developmental pediatrician and parent Dr. Mark Bertin provides a positive, simple, and empowering approach for raising children of all ages, and discusses his book How Children Thrive. Bringing together mindfulness, new science on brain development, and the messy reality of being a parent, Dr. Bertin has a created a breakthrough guide that will help children—and their parents—flourish.
Research has shown that the key to raising resilient, kind, and independent children lies in executive function, our mental capacity to manage just about everything in life. “Despite its wonky, overly scientific name, there is nothing complicated about building executive function,” Dr. Bertin writes. “It’s actually a lot more straightforward and less anxiety-provoking than most of the parenting advice out there.” Through concise, easily applied chapters, Dr. Bertin provides simple strategies for helping your children develop healthy EF while taking care of yourself and enjoying your family.

“The pressure to be the perfect parent is overwhelming,” writes Dr. Bertin, “but the truth is the job is too challenging and varied to ever be done to perfection.” With compassion and reassurance, Dr. Bertin presents a relaxed, instinctual, and evidence-based approach to raising children who thrive.

Join us for this episode with Dr. Adam Price, Ph.D., author of "He's Not Lazy."

Why are some teenage boys unmotivated? Why do they spend endless hours playing video games or glued to their phones and social media sites instead of studying? Is this a sign of laziness or something more troubling? As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Adam Price has found that teenage boys are extremely sensitive to the stress of our competitive achievement oriented culture—one that has created a pressure cooker for today’s adolescent and often leads to boys "opting out."

In He’s Not Lazy, Dr. Price, a renowned expert on ADHD and learning disabilities, explains how to help a boy who is not lazy, but rather, is conflicted about trying his best. Dr. Price will guide you to discover hidden obstacles to your son’s success, set expectations, and empower him to accept responsibility for his own future.

He’s Not Lazy will help you become your son’s ally, as he assumes greater self-confidence and becomes more self-reliant. Rather than reacting to pressure by shunning academic responsibilities altogether or propping up fear-based rebellion with justifications like “I am not going to be one of those nerds who have no life,” or “Tests don’t measure intelligence or help you learn, so what’s the point of studying for them?” your teenage son can work with you using the guidance in this book.

BIO: Dr. Price is a clinical psychologist with more than 20 years of experience working with children and teens. As the former Director of Outpatient Services at Newark Beth Israel Hospital and Associate Director at Family Connections, a mental health agency, he has supervised and trained numerous clinicians in family and child therapy. He maintains a private practice in New York City and Chatham, New Jersey.

Dr. Price has published articles on family and child therapy in publications including The Wall Street Journal and Family Circle, and is the author of the book He's Not Lazy: Empowering Your Son to Believe in Himself. Price has presented widely to both parents and educators on opting out, child development, and learning disabilities, and has appeared on “Good Day New York” and other programs to discuss topics ranging from discipline to the impact of video games on children.

An expert on helping differntly-wired children, Debbie Reber is a parenting activist, New York Times bestselling author, podcast host, and speaker who, before creating TiLT, spent more than fifteen years writing inspiring books for women and teens and speaking about issues like media literacy, self-esteem, and confidence.

But when Debbie learned that her son Asher was differently-wired, she spent years figuring out how to best support him in school and in life, recognizing how incredibly difficult it was to find solid, reliable, useful, and most of all optimistic, information for parents like her. Many of the websites and organizations that did exist didn’t speak to her, nor did they help her figure out a plan for getting Asher what he needed while supporting herself in the process. Her best leads came from word-of-mouth from other parents who’d been down the road before her, but even then, figuring out what to do and where to turn next was like going geocaching without a GPS. She created TiLT so parents stuck in this place of not-knowing and frustration can feel connected and grounded as they move forward in figuring out what their child needs in a way that feels positive and hopeful for the whole family.

Since 2002, she’s written ten books, including Differently Wired: Raising an Extraordinary Child in a Conventional World, which was published by Workman Publishing in June 2018. Her most recent books for young adults include Doable: The Girls’ Guide to Accomplishing Just About Anything and Chill: Stress-Reducing Techniques for a More Balanced, Peaceful You.

Our guest Dr. David Gleason is a neuropsychologist and author of the book "At What Cost?: Defending Adolescent Development in Fiercely Competitive Schools." Students with dyslexia, ADHD, and reading difficulties are often at risk of feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Dr. Gleason walks parents through striving for balance as we raise children and through increasing resiliency of children and adolescents.

Anxiety, depression, and their dangerous manifestations-substance abuse, eating disorders, self-injury and suicide- are increasing student conditions at many competitive high schools. Paradoxically, most of these schools promote themselves as being committed to students' holistic development in academics, athletics and the arts, and in their personal, social, and emotional growth. So why are so many students struggling? Dr. Gleason has investigated these concerns in competitive high schools throughout the United States and around the world, and has found almost complete unanimity in how educators and parents have responded to his interviews. In sum, these caring and dedicated adults fully admit to overscheduling, overworking and, at times, overwhelming their students and teenaged children. This conflict - adults wanting to educate and parent adolescents in healthy and balanced ways, but simultaneously, overscheduling, overworking and, at times, overwhelming them - is at the heart of this book.

Dr. David Gleason is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Concord, Massachusetts.  For thirty years, Dr. Gleason has worked with children and adolescents in many public and independent schools, providing assessments as well as clinical and educational consultations to faculty members, school administrators and parents.

Our guest Dean Bragonier is Founder and Executive Dyslexic of NoticeAbility, an organization that helps you unlock dyslexic strengths. He asks:

What if you were in a classroom where you were understood? What if learning in school focused on the skills that came easy to you? How would that have changed the way you thought about school? How would that setting have shaped you? What could have been possible?

At some point, we have all wondered, "What if...?"

This episode features someone who has actually thought of a SOLUTION to the dilemma that many students like us or our children face. We know that dyslexia has many advantages and creative skills that sometimes go untapped… and those are THE DESIRED SKILLS by employers!

What would happen if these strengths were highlighted in classrooms instead of ignored?!

Innovative problem-solver, Dean Bragonier is the Founder and Executive Dyslexic of NoticeAbility. NoticeAbility is cutting-edge as it “unlocks the dyslexic potential” with “experiential, project-based courses grounded in social-emotional methodology and executive function research.” This unique curriculum enables learning for middle and high school aged learners through multiple modalities.

Nelsons story is just as much an exploration on the many forms of intelligence as it is a study on the art of resilience.

“My parents... Like many parents of that time accepted, and many parents still today accept... that there are only three kind of children, the children that will be doctors, Lawyers and Indian Chiefs, …and then you have kids that are in the middle...  and then you have the kids like me, the dumb kids... the funny thing is, in many cases, those kids were the smartest kids in the room.”

Are you easily distracted by the tapping of your co-workers pencil, by your family member talking loudly on the phone, or by a barking dog?

Researchers have been investigating the differences between people with different levels of distractibility, or levels of ” sensory gating”. Turns out people with low sensory gating or “leaky filters” are correlated with higher levels of real world creative achievement.

In this episode with creativity researcher Darya Zabelina we get into an in-depth conversation about what constitutes a creative processing style. We talk about the neurobiology of creativity, if you should force your self to focus more- and if so what are the possible trade-offs, the problem with many creativity tests used in psychology studies, how to make school and work environments more creativity friendly and more!

  • What techniques can we use to infuse a sense of play and intrinsic motivation in your child and in every day adult life?

Jessica Hamman comes on to talk about why so many schools struggle to identify and properly accommodate dyslexia. You will love hearing her explain and give advice on what parents can say and do to support the schools and teachers in getting the proper resources they need to help your child.

Founder of Educator Learning Lab, Jessica started her advocacy journey over 30 years ago! She grew up in a family of education professionals with a deep interest in learning disabilities (her father was a special education attorney and child advocate-- and gathered the committee who helped develop the definition of dyslexia that's accepted in most states!! Her mom was an Orton Gillingham therapist, trainer and professor at the Center for Dyslexia Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ!) They embarked on a journey advocating for her brother, and two decades later, Jessica found herself in a similar situation advocating for her own son. During this time she found there was such a lack of understanding surrounding dyslexia (almost as much as before!). Why was there still such a disconnect between the research to practice?! It became her mission to help bridge this gap! Listen along as we chat with this fascinating, brilliant, creative mom!

Margaret Rooke is a mother to a daughter with dyslexia, and their own journey is what catapulted her to write two amazing books! The first was "Creative, Successful, Dyslexic: 23 High Achievers Share Their Stories" where she talked to prominent famous people (Like Richard Branson!). The latest is "Dyslexia is My Superpower (Most of the Time)", which features interviews with more than 100 children and young adults with dyslexia from across the world. The crazy thing about this book is that it is the first book that speaks from the narrative of the actual children that have dyslexia!

Doesn't that blow your mind?!

There is such a wealth of wisdom when we slow down and actually listen to the students and what they are experiencing. For a long time the only people talking about dyslexia were researchers and academics... but now the internet has given a platform and a voice to parents, so we started hearing about dyslexia from parents, and even adult dyslexics who share about their dyslexia .... It's fascinating that now we are able to hear from the perspective of the children themselves. We hope you enjoy this amazing talk. Let us know your thoughts on this one!

Surprisingly, perfectionism might manifest itself in various ways. Often times students with hidden perfectionistic ideals might go undetected because they seem messy, lazy, unorganized or seem like they are not trying (*hint*: this is risk avoidance! For example, they would rather take the 0 grade by not trying vs trying and getting an 80% grade because it did not turn out like they envision in their mind). But actually, students who are under-performing might be masking a fear that is actually the root of perfectionism. There might be an underlying belief of unreasonable expectations-- which may result in surprising behaviors that tie into perfectionism. You cannot really achieve perfectionism --It rarely leads to high achievement and might even effect their socialness! It may seem counterintutive but perfectionism is rarely helpful!

Internal scripts in perfectionist dyslexic students might sound like "OK - New semester! I am going to be EVEN BETTER than last time- this is the time when I know I will be so much better!"
Do you know if perfectionism is showing up in your child in ways you would not expect?

Sound familiar? Are you a perfectionist yourself?

I am dyslexic and so is my husband, our daughter is 6 in yr 2 at school in the UK. She is really struggling and I can see exactly the way I did at school, my best friend at school was very bright and I pretty much copied her work the whole way through primary and high school and I want to be able to help as much as I can. My daughter is so wonderful and has many other amazing talents like they way she engages with people, she has never had a bad day in her life she is always happy, very creative and will find fun and game in everything. Unfortunately the English school system doesn’t seem to value these things and the emphasis is on reading and spelling and maths. I would love to hear your top 5 tips or strategies to help her retain what she is learning. Thank you I love the podcast and love the idea of these shorter episodes xxx

Are you wondering about how to start the assessment process for your child? Have you gotten an assessment in the past but still feel like you have questions? YOU are NOT ALONE! Assessment is tricky and hard to navigate! This topic has gotten a lot of popularity due to the process parents go through to get a proper assessment. Parents often wonder:

How do you know where to go and who to talk to?

Is it worth the money, time, and effort?

How can we determine all of this?

To help us answer these pressing questions we quest with guest Dr. Michael Hart. He has over 25 years experience, "protecting and empowering children and adults who have led lives of confusion and sometimes even desperation due to learning issues." Together we go over the essentials for getting a proper assessment and what parents need to know about becoming "Enlightened Warriors" for their children.

"Parents can advocate like an Enlightened Warrior... By educating themselves with information and learning how to interpret test results and what they mean...They become fierce and powerful but not in the way people usually think. An Enlightened Warrior doesn’t want war or violence... But they are prepared to be fearless in the face of push-back or conflict."

You won't want to miss his unique insight and helpful tips. Be sure to listen to the end!

He draws upon three decades of work as a neuropsychologist, teacher educator, and school consultant to address this gap. This book really can help change the way parents and teachers think about why kids with LD and ADHD find school and homework so toxic, while also offering abundant supply of practical, understandable strategies that have been shown to reduce stress at school and at home, such as Shultz’s SAVING FASE, and DE-STRESS models

This episode explores:

Microschools and Jade’s work developing these institutions with others,

Neurodivergent learners and how they can be supported,

Labels and the meaning or lack of meaning they offer,

Achievement and what that looks like for different learners,

Homework and testing- to do or not to do!,

Connecting with your child and the choices you can make to truly support them,

AND SO MUCH MORE!

According to Jade, “if you’ve landed on my website, you’ve probably had some experience with neurodivergent children. Quirky children with brains that seem to work differently from the norm. Children who need an unusual amount of scaffolding to accomplish simple looking tasks yet inspire us with boundary pushing insights and creations. Today's quest goes deep into the heart of motivation. We uncover what enables someone to be *really* motivated. We wonder what fuels that drive which allows someone to do something against all the impossible odds. THAT kind of motivation that turns barriers into frontiers. Parents and teachers often wonder how we can inspire unmotivated students to unlock within them this intrinsic motivation which is often so powerful.

Looking for this answer too? Our quest with Dr. Gina Riley is all about this intriguing topic so be sure to listen until the end as we talk about:

  • Learning environments that enable intrinsic motivation,
  • Giving your child time, space and love to develop their interests and a true love for learning,
  • The key ingredients needed to unlock intrinsic motivation,
  • Why we should be celebrating the competence and strengths every child has,
  • And the role that *learning how to learn* plays in their future.

Dr. Gina Riley is an educational psychologist and Clinical Professor of Adolescent Special Education at Hunter College. Dr. Riley has over fifteen years experience working with teens with learning disabilities and emotional and behavioral disorders. She is also a seasoned academic, with years of teaching, research, and supervisory experience within the fields of special education, psychology, school psychology, and mental health counseling. Her master’s thesis focused on intrinsic motivation within home education environments, and her doctoral dissertation compared levels of competence, autonomy, and relatedness in home educated and traditionally educated young adults. Dr. Riley also has extensive experience in online education and distance learning at the college/university level. She is a mom herself and home-schooled her son from kindergarten to 12th grade.
